Algorithm Insights

Hi there,

This week, we got a glimpse inside the different Algorithms from the Head of Instagram and the Head of Threads. As we move closer to the election, we have yet again the issue of the platforms “moderating” our content and straight out deleting content.

Have you noticed any differences in your content?

Social Media Marketing Updates

Quote of the Week

“Your mind is a garden. Your thoughts are the seeds. You can grow flowers, or you can grow weeds.”

Willam Wordsworth

One of my all-time favourite books. This book explores how to free your mind from constant chatter and negativity. It teaches how to observe your thoughts without letting them control you, helping you tend to the mental garden more effectively.

Instagram Algorithm

If you are inside the Social Shells course, you know I have been preaching for years to use carousel posts over single images for more reach. Now the main man himself, aka Adam Moseri, Head of Instagram, has explained why that is. Watch his video here.

Extra Tip: Don’t use the word “vote” in your posts on Instagram; according to research by the Washington Post, this can lead to a shadowban.

Threads Algorithm

Meta has shared insights to help creators optimize their engagement on Threads, emphasizing the importance of driving conversations through comments—whether positive or negative. According to the company, posts that generate discussions are more likely to be recommended. Creators are encouraged to engage actively with their audience, reply to other creators, and interact with regular users to boost visibility. Meta also suggests using AI-generated tags, assuring that they won’t impact content distribution. Interestingly, weekends may offer higher engagement, as Threads operates in real-time, making it a prime opportunity for posting. Meta further recommends creators post 2-5 times per week, noting that frequent activity is linked to higher impressions per post.

According to this article, creators on threads struggle to understand what really works. Sounds a bit like the algorithm prioritizes posts that spark replies, even if the topics seem mundane, creating a random feel to the feed.

Is AI better?

Buffer analyzed over 1.2 million posts and found that AI-assisted content generally outperforms human-only posts across most platforms in terms of engagement. AI-generated posts saw a median engagement rate of 5.87%, compared to 4.82% for non-AI posts. The most significant boost was on Threads, with AI-assisted posts showing double the engagement. Buffer attributes this improvement to AI’s ability to help creators post more frequently and maintain content quality, leading to better audience engagement.

Personally, I have a hard time believing that, but then again, data never lies.
